This simple red lentil dal from First Steps Nutrition Trust can be cooked in one step and is designed for the whole family.

  • 200g red lentils (about 1 cup / 250ml dried red lentils)
  • 400ml water
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon chaat masala powder
  • 2cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1 small onion, peeled and finely diced

Put all the ingredients into a saucepan and simmer with the lid on, on a medium heat, until the lentils and vegetables are cooked. This recipe makes 4 portions of about 120g each.
