The Better by Half Roadmap refreshed

News | Published  25 September 2024

We are excited to release the updated Better by Half Roadmap, Eating Better’s guide for achieving nutritious, healthy and sustainable diets across the UK, with a focus on less and better meat and dairy. This revision builds on its creation in 2019. It is a reflection of our shared objectives as an alliance, formed through collaboration between our 68 member organisations.

Together, we’ve harnessed our collective expertise and perspectives to strengthen the roadmap, ensuring it not only captures the nuances of the food system but also unites us in working towards one common goal: transforming the way we produce and consume food for the benefit of people, animals, and the planet.

Why we updated the Roadmap

Since its original launch in 2019, the Better by Half roadmap has been used as Eating Better’s ‘north star’, outlining 25 actions across five influential sectors, where change needs to happen to ensure everyone has access to healthy, nutritious and affordable food.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen progress across the 5 sectors included in the roadmap. However, the journey is ongoing and more work is needed across the board. This refresh ensures that the roadmap remains relevant and actionable.

Key changes

Here’s what’s new in the updated roadmap:

  1. Refined actions across all five sectors
We’ve improved the clarity and specificity of all actions across the five key sectors- government, producers, food retail and manufacturers, food service, and financial institutions and investors. By sharpening the language and focusing on concrete steps, we’re ensuring that each ask is more actionable and better aligned with the current challenges and opportunities in the food system.
  2. Introduction of a Just Transition action
The roadmap now contains a dedicated action focused on achieving a Just Transition for agriculture, reflecting the importance of our producers within our mission. With significant changes in UK agricultural policies over the past few years, particularly the shift to the Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS) in England, this action outlines the steps that both the UK and devolved governments must take to support farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices.
  3. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Nations lens
We have made the language of the roadmap more inclusive and reflective of the diverse population and needs of the UK. Additionally, we better reflected the  devolved nations, ensuring the roadmap’s relevance and applicability across all countries of the UK.

The path forward

The updated Better by Half roadmap is designed to inspire and enable action at every level, guiding the alliance to influence everyone from policymakers to food industry leaders to consumers. Our members are key to achieving our goals and we are excited to continue working with them.

We believe that, with this refreshed roadmap, we are better equipped to tackle the complex challenges ahead and build a food system that works for people, animals, and the planet. Tackling issues across the sector and engaging drivers of change will lead to a food system where less and better meat and dairy serves people, animals and the planet. As we continue to make progress on food across the UK, we will look to update the roadmap further to ensure we are staying up to date.

We invite you to explore the updated roadmap and join us in shaping the future of food. For more details, visit our Better by Half roadmap page.
